On Saturday, November 26th, 2016, some of the most important works of art from the 20th century were deliberately destroyed in an act of utter selfishness, greed and Oedipal psychosis. The only thing more disgusting than the act itself, is that barely anyone knows it occurred.
Joe Corre`, the self entitled, insignificant prig, born of Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, set alight seven million dollars worth of memorabilia from the earliest days of Punk. This was treasure that conceived an artistic movement that changed lives. It's influence is immeasurable. It changed everything.
Corre`'s excuse was more of the usual insipid rhetoric-"Punk's become a commodity." Yeah Yeah, we were saying that twenty years ago. Hell, were were saying it FOURTY years ago! "Stop conning a younger generation that it somehow has any currency to deal with the issues that they face" This younger generation doesn't listen to Punk-or Post-Punk. Look at them! THEY SHOULD!!
"Rather than a movement for change, punk has become like a fucking museum piece" This is a BAD thing?! It should be in museums-it's ART!! Punk is arguably the most important and quintessentially British art movement since Bacon met Freud, or possibly even the Pre-Raphealite School.
Art; entire art movements are measured by their endurance through generations, and their influence on the cultures that succeed it. Punk has proven itself a legitimate art form.
This makes the destruction of original memorabilia such as silkscreened posters and T-shirts, Westwood's earliest designs, and most heartbreaking, master tapes and dozens of unheard recordings, a true crime, for which Corre` should be vehemently sanctioned.
Destroying history that had such an impact on us. I expect this from the Taliban and ISIS.
